What is a Retaining Wall?

A retaining wall could be a smart addition to your home if it is located on a slope. It helps you maintain your ground at a certain level by holding back the dirt on the other side. While many use it to improve the aesthetics of their home, it is highly functional too.

Retaining walls can be used to increase the usable space on your property. Steep slopes are usually inhabitable, and in some cases, you may not have enough room for a patio. A retaining wall can help you buy evening out the uneven terrain, giving you more room to work on.

When properly constructed, retaining walls may also prevent flooding and soil erosion. Soil erosion is a potential threat to properties on slopes.

What are the Different Types of Retaining Walls?

Various retaining wall designs and materials are available to meet the specific requirements of each given project and location. Here are some of the common types of retaining walls you can opt for.

  1. The gravity wall is the simplest since it is literally just a wall that keeps soil in place. The lack of reinforcing makes them suitable for use only on relatively short walls.
  2. Next, there are the L-shaped Cantilever retaining walls. Since the base of the L projects is behind the wall, the retained soil acts as a load and adds strength to the structure.
  3. Then there are sheet piling walls made of pilings driven deep into the ground.
  4. Finally, we have the Anchored retaining walls, which are supported by long anchors that run through the wall and deep into the soil.

Retaining Wall Materials

We understand some homeowners may get carried away with the aesthetics of their retaining walls.  But they’ll also need to look at the materials used to preserve its structural integrity. What the landscape blocks are made of significantly impacts how the wall appears.

A concrete block retaining wall is made from poured concrete. It is strong, can be shaped in any way, and has a uniform appearance. Next, we have the stone retaining wall blocks, which are great if you’re going for a classic look. This material is highly durable and can last a long time.

Finally, there is the traditional brick retaining wall.  They require the least maintenance and are eco-friendly too! We offer plenty of options for installing your retaining walls, so reach out to us so we can get started on yours immediately.
